Steffen Thum is a composer for film, TV, games, commercials and mixed media, based in Berlin.

With over 70 credits to his name, Steffen has garnered extensive experience across high profile studio films, TV series and ad campaigns, as well as independent cinema and celebrated shorts, collectively aggregating over $7 billion at the international box office.

​

Most recently, Steffen wrote the music for STOCKHOLM BLOODBATH, the historic action film by acclaimed director Mikael Håfström. Defying genre conventions, Steffen combines epic orchestra with Nordic folk and modern rock influences, which Movie Music International describes as "a major work for the beginning of the year".

 

For director Matt Routledge, he scored the action-packed indie horror breakout TRIBAL - GET OUT ALIVE, which won Best Original Score at the 2020 UK Motion Picture Festival.

Steffen wrote the original scores for two of 2019's biggest surprise hits of the summer - the heart-warming Chinese drama LOOKING UP, directed by Deng Chao and Yu Baimei, which debuted no. 1 at the Chinese Box Office ahead of THE LION KING, as well as the action-packed Paramount horror feature CRAWL (directed by Alexandre Aja, produced by Sam Raimi), which he co-composed with fellow composer Max Aruj.

Max and Steffen further collaborated on the scores to the six-part Amazon Prime documentary series THIS IS FOOTBALL for 14th Street Music, the breathtaking short IGNITE - A BURNING MAN EXPERIENCE, indie thriller WARNING SHOT (with David Spade, Bruce Dern), Netflix Original film iBOY (with Maisie Williams), TAKE THE SHOT and the Warner Brothers short film RESURRECT.

Steffen first started a career in film post production before making his way into music, studying media composition and audio production in Germany as well as film scoring in Los Angeles, where he moved in 2013.

 

In 2014, Steffen began working with award-winning film composer Lorne Balfe and 14thStreetMusic at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA.

He since served as score producer for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT, GEOSTORM and CHURCHILL, as well as contributing additional music and arrangements to films like TOP GUN: MAVERICK, Marvel's BLACK WIDOW, AD ASTRA, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE and diverse TV series such as THE CROWN, HIS DARK MATERIALS, THE GILDED AGE, HUNTERS, MARCELLA and National Geographic’s GENIUS, as well as video games such as Marvel's SPIDERMAN 2 and SKYLANDERS: SUPERCHARGERS.​

 

Further credits include THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, TERMINATOR: GENISYS, Michael Bay’s 13 HOURS and the DreamWorks Animation features KUNG FU PANDA 3, HOME and THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR.
